Professor Wormwood was a puppet created from a wooden frame and feathers plucked from a chicken; given their own mind and soul, they began to wander the world and became the eccentric old sage they are today.
Somewhere along the way, they seem to have picked up a few tag-alongs in the form of a rare species of mushroom. These mushrooms took root in their frame and expel sleeping spores when disturbed - luckily, being made of wood, the Professor neither feels pain from the roots, nor is affected by the drowsiness effect of the spores. In fact, they have grown quite fond of the mushrooms.
It is a bit irritating that they can't wear their favorite spectacles over their eyes anymore, but adaptation is key.
