Nyx's existence is a complicated one, as she has many duties to perform. Most, if not all, of these duties revolving around children.
One of these consists of calming those whom are fearful of the night or darkness. Due to her nature as a sort of night deity, she can detect a child in distress. Upon locating the child, she will perch herself outside of their window, emitting a soothing coo that will trigger neurons, called gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA for short), within their brain to start the calming process and also draw them to look outside.
At seeing her, they become transfixed by her bright, silvery eyes and glittering feathers, the second of which glimmer in a meditatively hypnotic way - further coaxing more GABA to be produced, and thus slowly lulling them in to a restful and relaxing sleep.
Her second duty is a much more somber one.
She is the caretaker of children's souls.. More specifically, the souls of those whom died tragically at a young age - typically at the hands of neglect, abuse, or other such terrible instances.
Often referred to as "Forgotten Souls", they are collected shortly after their passing, many often feeling their first warm and loving embrace that they've ever felt in their short lives, as they are brought in to the care of the entity.
Within her being, they are nurtured, cared for, and given the love and affection they were not given in their mortal life. If they wish, they are given a chance at another life. Some choose this sooner, while others, much much later, and some never at all.
Every star seen on her plumage is a "Forgotten Soul".
And yes, these are the same stars that living children see when being lulled to sleep. Because who better to help a fearful child, than the innocence of other children.
