About
Living your entire life, floating in the clouds, staring down at civilization... It really gives you perspective. From the sky, everything is so small, so meaningless...
It left Onyx feeling detached.
He was like the clouds, floating over the horizon, staring down at the world beneath, merely observing, and in maybe a very small way affecting, but he was not the tides of the ocean crashing against the beach or the wind buffeting through the trees, no, he was the gentle passage of time, the leaf drifting through the wind, or floating down the river, a quiet observer to the destructiveness of nature, recording each travesty in the stone of his memory, but offering nothing to alter the course of history.
It was simply not his place.
Such a passive, bleak outlook on life was not easily welcomed, and most other villagers found themselves naturally repelled by his aura, something about him they couldn't quite peg but were quite turned off by. Was it his calm, general silence, even in the midst of chaos, or his inquisitive eyes, that seemed to stare right through you, that troubled you the most? It was hard to tell.
Thus, it became far too easy for Onyx to simply up and leave everything he knew behind. Few even noticed he'd left, other than the surroundings seemed less grim.
The earth called to him, called to him to bare witness to more of its beauty, its secrets and wonders, the connection he and the planet seemed to share beckoned, and he came calling, obliged to wander, explore, and record.
And so he took off.
