When they ran across it, lying off to the side on a beach, they thought it was some carving made of driftwood and took it in.

In the night, as one unfortunate crew member was tasked with putting it away, the things started to slither from it.
Whispering.
They said they could help.
Be very helpful.
And as the serpentine things wrapped tightly around the panicked crew member's body, squeezing in, the crew member started to scream.
A sound quickly silenced, as such an opening was soon filled with the writhing blackness. Pouring a seemingly endless amount of tendrils into them.
The body fell to the floor.
Malice was dubious, to say the least. 'Exactly how is that usef-' he was cut off by the corpse rising from the floor. Black ichor leaked from it's smiling face as it's skin began to slowly split in places, the tentacles pushing their way out.
In unison, the corpse and apparent driftwood creature answer.
'We have many uses. As many uses as bodies.'
