Scarlett grew up in poverty to a single parent she is now estranged from (she does not like to talk about it). These dire circumstances forced her to steal in order to survive. Growing up this way, her body was trained to be incredibly swift in order to get away with her crimes. Her stealing continued long into her young adulthood.
That is, until she was caught stealing from Sadie Mae.
Sadie Mae quickly detected the fox's desperation and eventually struck a deal with her, offering her guidance towards a different career, one that would make great use of her athletic ability. This of course, was the career of being a contracted warrior, something Sadie Mae once was. In exchange for her lessons and lodging, Scarlett helps her gather food and protect the Briarwood Clearing. Her pride keeps her from outwardly expressing just how grateful she was to finally have people believe in her, but Scarlett truly feels practically indebted to Sadie Mae's kindness and is very loyal to her as a result.
