In my opinion, they should've kept that darker tone. Some of the shadow games are super creative and make you think along with the protagonists. Oh and... in season 0 you might notice the card game works with different rules, it was also actually called "Magic and Wizards" before they settled with Duel monsters. It was when DM got popular they steered away from the varied mature Shadow Games and focused purely on the more child-friendly card game. If DM didn't get popular the manga might've gone very differently!

Yeah it's pretty violent hahaha. Did you know Yugioh used to be a HORROR MANGA? It still shows in the earliest pages! After seeing season 0 I recommend taking a peek at the manga, because even the season 0 anime censored or even downright skipped some manga scenes because they were even too violent for THAT anime! Also Mokuba was just as sinister as Seto Kaiba, which is pretty interesting.
In the Duel Monsters anime the origin story was explained in some lazy flashbacks, but there still was a lot missing that season 0 DID cover. Season 0 actually shows why and when Yugi solved the Puzzle, what happened after, and even the moment when Yugi and Yami see eachother and talk to eachother for the very first time! It's so incredibly sweet!
