I don't play this game anymore, but I played during the beta.
To begin exploring you either click the right hand side of your screen where it says 'Active villager' and select the job logo or go to Villager -click one- go to career
Just a lil' bit more haha, site only just now opened up but I know a bit of the in's and out's of how it works so I'll be more than happy to offer some help whenever ya need any!
To progress a character you basically have to continue to do their job in order to improve their % on how well they 'scavenge-make medicine-etc'
However if you mean how they start out and how to do things with them? To start off the game quickly and rake in money you'll want an explorer + herbalist (Other ways are fine but explorer is a must really, herbalist is optional) but that's how I figured out how to get most money so far.
You'll want to scavenge as much as you can and through that earn money until you have another character slot! You sell things via inventory -> Quickslot ->mass selection chart that pops up but yeh it's pretty much playing stock market as a furry- XD
From what I understood, you need to make character interact according to their job.
The basic is to start with an explorer. (if your character has another job, you can change their job once per day)
The explorer can out the village and find items. You can sell these items or keep them and let another character use them to do their jobs.
For example, when my explorer find seeds, I use them with my herbalist to grow plants. These plants can be used by doctors or maybe other classes to make potions... It's all about making interactions.
